Nick Aries

Nick is a partner and co-head of our representative (non-US law) office in San Francisco. He advises on and coordinates European and UK IP law matters, as well as connecting US clients with Bird & Bird’s European, Middle East, and Asia-Pacific legal experts in all practice areas.

Nick is adept at identifying and advising on the IP issues in the digital economy, including copyright and trademark questions raised by online services and social media. Nick also advises on coordinating multi-jurisdictional IP litigation and strategy. Alongside these disputes and advisory work, Nick’s practice covers transactional IP work such as licensing (particularly, trademark licensing arrangements), and advice on the IP aspects of large scale corporate restructures and reorganisations.

Nick has been recognized by WTR as one of the World’s Leading Trademark Professionals.

Nick’s UK litigation experience covers trademark infringement and passing off, breach of license/coexistence agreement, trade secrets, and designs. Example UK cases include Merck KGaA v Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp & ots, Roger Maier & Assos of Switzerland v Asos Plc & Asos.com Ltd, Kenexa v Alberg, The Codemasters Software Co Ltd v Automobile Club de l’Ouest and Daimler AG v Sany Group Co Ltd. He also acts in proceedings before the UK IPO and EU IPO.

Nick’s design rights experience encompasses filing strategy, international filing programs, and dispute resolution, including a Europe-wide Customs enforcement project protecting consumer electronics products.

Through client secondments to a large digital communications company and a major international brand, Nick has acquired valuable insight into the role of legal advice in business decision-making.

Nick chairs the International sub-committee of INTA’s Copyright Committee, contributes to a number of legal publications, and has been teaching on two university postgraduate IP courses in the UK.
