In its most recent special report, “Top Intellectual Property Lawyers 2023,” the Daily Journal honored Vern Norviel of Wilson Sonsini as one of the best intellectual property attorneys working in patent litigation, trademark, and copyright on May 17, 2023. The feature focuses primarily on Vern’s work advising clients in the biotechnology sector in his career in intellectual property law.

Vern attributes a significant portion of his success to Alejandro Zaffaroni, who taught him the “ins and outs” of the industry and was the founder of several Silicon Valley businesses. It was through working with an enthusiastic Zaffaroni on different ventures in biotechnology that Vern understood the significance of the work. Since then, he has advised a number of well-known businesses, such as Verve Therapeutics, a cardiovascular disease biotechnology company, and Good Therapeutics, an immuno-oncology company. For lawyers like him and others in the biotechnology field, Vern says, “It’s somewhat of a religion for us went against to simply work.” Vern expresses his gratitude for the opportunity to “work with all these smart people on things that are going to help treat cancer or other diseases” as the practice continues to expand.
